Remodista spends a few days thinking about agility at PayPal's C360

4/4/2019

Thriving in an era of change asks us to move through present time with agility. We spent a few days in beautiful Marina Del Rey at PayPal’s annual C360 customer appreciation event. It was our third year, as a guest, and we continue to be honored by their welcoming support of our small but important research community that cultivates women leaders. Would it be ridiculous to think that trusted community will change the future? With companies like PayPal, we say "no!" Their ability to see value in the larger picture makes our ongoing relationship a thrill because they attract other like-minded leaders.
Kelly Stickel, our CEO, took some time to reflect and share some of the moments that inspired her at C360:

PayPal Shares Thoughts about the Future

PayPal leaders always grab my attention with their zero to sixty delivery of innovation. Sharing many styles, their authenticity is palpable, as they openly share forward thinking insights. This year was no different as their executives highlighted technology that will change the future in the next 10-15 years; processing power, artificial intelligence and machine learning (general), explosion of data, and 5G.
5G will solve our battery power issue by moving the processing out of the phone and into the network. The cost of phones will be drastically reduced. This alone sent me on a mental journey, thinking how -just this one action will affect everything else. Learning to bring people through change is challenging to do. You should expect failure to be a part of the whole process.

Dr. Condoleezza Rice Shares a Look at Global Order and How Agility is Applied

It was inspiring to hear Dr. Rice, 66th United States Secretary of State, talk about global order, and put it in the perspective of being agile. Her storytelling capabilities did not disappoint.  She discussed the rise of the 4 Horsemen; populism, nativism, isolationism, and nationalism. But optimistically, she noted that we will be wise enough to move through that challenges that the rise of these shifts bring. That was comforting to hear, as we see a breakdown of international liberal order.

Chris Voss Talks About Positive Thoughts and Business

Another impactful speaker was Chris Voss from The Black Swan Group, author of Never Split the Difference, and top hostage negotiator for the FBI. He gave us insights on how to use positive thoughts and optimism to negotiate more deals with higher success rates of closing. He noted that when you can share a laugh early in the conversation it increases the odds of you making a deal.
"Never Split the Difference takes you inside the world of high-stakes negotiations and into Voss’s head, revealing the skills that helped him and his colleagues succeed where it mattered most: saving lives. In this practical guide, he shares the nine effective principles—counterintuitive tactics and strategies—you too can use to become more persuasive in both your professional and personal life."

Highlights from Mel Robbins, Chau Banks, and Ron Howard on Day 2

Picture
Rather than having a PayPal panel talking about the roadmap and agenda, they let a client run moderate the conversation. Chau Banks, CTO of Revlon, and one of our 2019 Women2Watch, ran the panel discussion. It was fantastic to hear more about PayPal's commitment to help their customers benefit furthers from their growing community products and platform.
On Day 2, Mel Robbins inspired us with Using The 5 Second Rule in You Life, an international best seller. 5-4-3-2-1 can help you achieve whatever you want in life. What is cool about her story is she uses a combination of science, and first hand accounts of people around the world who have used her method, as a blueprint for taking action.

The event wrapped up with an intimate fireside chat with Veronica Katz and Ron Howard. From his perspective storytelling is everything. Mr. Howard was as generous and kind in person as he seems on the screen, and I was pleasantly surprised how he shared stories of his film career.

We capped the time off with a sailing excursion out of Marina Del Rey. Eight teams of six, spent the afternoon sailing and relaxing after two days of focused learning.

It will be exciting to get back to the office and find ways to bring this inspiration and insights to work as we look to solve the future of business. A BIG Thank You to PayPal for continuing to nurture their community of partners and clients!
